'Dreaming Chavela' by Rafael Amargo
The film will be screened at 'Matinées du Film sur l’Art' organized by FIFA (Festival International du Film sur l’Art) in collaboration with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
At the age of 35, artist Rafael Amargo feels that his muses have deserted him, something that many artists go through in their careers. He feels a need to rekindle the magic of the “art fairy.” This launches him on a journey that takes him to the very of source of inspiration, across seas and mountains and roads, until he finally arrives at the refuge of the real protagonist of the film, Mexican singer Chavela Vargas (1919-2012), a leading figure in ranchera music. His goal is to give her a letter from poet Federico García Lorca, for whom both have enormous admiration.
Born in 1975, Rafael Amargo is a Spanish dancer and choreographer. His choreographies, often very close to contemporary dance, invariably preserve the essence of flamenco. He formed his own company, Compañía Rafael Amargo, in 1997.
