Giulia Valle at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal

Giulia Valle at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal

This summer the Giulia Valle Trio will be touring the U.S. and Canada showing the quality of Spanish Jazz.

Italy-born and Barcelona-raised, composer, bassist, and bandleader Giulia Valle began her musical studies with a classical education at the Liceo Conservatory before crossing the ocean to sharpen her jazz skills in New York City among players such as Scott Colley and Ben Street.

Now a defining influence on the thriving sound of contemporary Barcelona jazz, Valle incorporates influences in Spanish, Brazilian, and Argentine musical traditions into her compositions and performance. However, she maintains a connection to New York and to those she worked with there, including trumpeter John McNeil, who featured her on his 2003 album This Way Out. The interplay of Spanish and New York traditions is part of what gives Barcelona jazz its particular aesthetic –meaning that Valle bears strong responsibility for shaping the sound of her city.
