Douglas Cardinal granted the Order of the Civil Merit

Canadian architect Douglas Cardinal, known for his works inspired by nature, sustainability and the environment, will be bestowed as Commander of the Order of the Civil Merit, granted by His Majesty King Felipe VI, in a ceremony at the Embassy of Spain.

Douglas Cardinal’s flowing architecture marked with smooth curvilinear forms is influenced by his Indigenous heritage as well as European Expressionist architecture. Antonio Gaudi’s influence is alive in Cardinal’s achievements, building up bridges between Spain and Canada.

In his architectural works, Cardinal also puts the emphasis on sustainability, the environment, and the creation of buildings in harmony with nature. His Siksika and Ojibwe family origins have led many to refer to his work as indigenous art. Proud of his origin, he describes himself as an organic architect who underlines nature and the richness of environment.

Among his major architectural works are St. Mary’s Church, The Group of Seven and the Canadian Museum of History where he met his wife Idoia Arana-Beobide, a Spanish woman who is presently working on her PhD in Basque Matricultural Spiritual Tradition.

Please note that this event is by invitation only and is not open to the public.
