Spanish cinema 2023: Embrujo

Join us at the uOttawa film club “Viernes de pelicula” on the occasion of Spanish Cinema day with the screening of “Embrujo.”

October 6th marks the third edition of Spanish Cinema Day (Día del Cine Español), an event that aims to vindicate the importance of the Spanish cinema as a cultural heritage, as a generator of a common identity and imaginary. Events and actions are organized during a day –both in the Spanish territory and internationally– that celebrate the richness and diversity of Spain’s cinematography and highlight the work of its professionals.

This year the screened film is Embrujo, directed by Carlos Serrano de Osma and starring Lola Flores and Manolo Caracol, two undeniable stars of Flamenco music and dance:

Embrujo

  • Directed by Carlos Serrano de Osma, Spain, 1947, 80 minutes.
  • In Spanish with English subtitles.

Manolo discovers in Lola not only the great artist that everyone falls in love with, but also an obsession, a love that transcends the limits of reason and that will make him fall from grace. After her success, Lola is hired to export Flamenco art to some of the biggest cities of the world. Lola’s success will find its parallelism in Manolo’s failure and surrender to alcohol. But the feeling that Manolo has left in Lola is too great and will make her return to Spain to rediscover his obsession.
