Akram Khan & Israel Galván: Torobaka

Akram Khan & Israel Galván: Torobaka

Two brilliant artists at the peak of their respective dance forms collaborate to create an electrifying showcase of breathtaking virtuosity.

From Akram Khan comes the technical wizardry of Indian kathak reenvisioned in a contemporary language, its startling speed and lustre delivered with lyrical elegance. From Israel Galván comes the precision and bravado of his particular modern flamenco, dazzling and dynamic.

The blend of virility and spiritual elegance, propelled by the haunting live accompaniment of the five singers and musicians, is transcendent. With brilliant circles of light emblematic of a bull-ring, Khan and Galván’s union spawns an intense dueling dialogue, a riveting blend of ferocious intensity.

Torobaka (meaning bullcow in reference to the animals sacred to their respective homelands) is a unique and sublime fusion of dynamic proportions.

(…) a fascinating meeting of cultures. They make a compelling duo, possessed by rhythm… it feels primal. When they are in the full flow of dancing, you can’t deny the brilliance.
